A selection of war memorials in Darfield, near Barnsley |
Summary articles about war memorials in Barnsley are published on the Barnsley & District War Memorials (B&DWM) website. I began that site as a front window for the Barnsley War Memorials Project (BWMP) in November 2013 and in February 2021 it had 434 posts plus an additional 136 linked posts on the Barnsley & District War Memorials Gravestones site and 89 on the accompanying Barnsley Soldiers Remembered site.
I was not the only contributor to these sites - Fay Polson took over the role of webmaster after I had to leave the BWMP in late 2016 and Mary Lipscombe posted most of the articles on the War Memorials Gravestones site. Some of the posts on Barnsley Soldiers Remembered were contributed by family members, I merely formated and uploaded them to the site. Credit was always given, although some people preferred for their full names not to appear online.
After the BWMP was wound up in late 2020 myself and Pete Schofield (both of us ex-BWMP committee members) took over their site and changed its name to the current Barnsley & District War Memorials. We know of many more memorials that could be posted to the site and plan to expand the coverage to include Commonwealth War Graves Commission gravestones in Barnsley churchyards and cemeteries - I know they are not war memorials but we might as well have the commemoration of Barnsley servicemen and women all in one place. Pete has already uploaded many of the photographs taken by himself and Wayne Bywater to the Find A Grave website and the B&DWM site will provide an index and links.
As part of the research for my PhD into First World War Commemoration and Remembrance in Barnsley I hope to write some articles about war memorials for this site (which will be the ones including a lot of research) and the B&DWM site (which will be the brief listing type). The list below includes anything which I contributed to the B&DWM site since applying for a place on a PhD in early 2020. Some of these posts were originally uploaded to this site, Barnsley's History - Commemoration and Remembrance, and were then transferred to the B&DWM site in February 2021 as I began seriously upgrading that site following its transfer to Pete and myself.
Pete compiles index lists of the photographs and records, posts to Find A Grave and keeps the Master Spreadsheet of Barnsley men and women who were killed in any conflict up to date with any information contributed (we found out early on that one person should hold editing rights, it is far too easy to corrupt a spreadsheet) - I am the usual editor for the B&DWM site. We are both administrators for the Barnsley's History - The Great War Facebook page.

As some of these are not new posts they don't appear on the 'Blog Archive' on the side of the pages. ***
